About
History of KCA
In 1978 a group of visionary, Bible believing parents founded Lexington Park Christian School (LPCS). They followed the lead of many like-minded parents across America, who had established Christian day schools to educate their children in harmony with their most cherished beliefs. They wanted their children's teachers and curriculum to complement and reinforce the Biblical worldview they taught and treasured in their homes and churches.
LPCS began as an extension of the Lexington Park Baptist Church's early childhood day school ministry. Recognizing the deep convictions many of his members held concerning their children's education, Pastor Mal Utleye established a committee to study the feasibility of a Christian day school in Lexington Park. The committee recommended to expand the church's ten-year-old preschool program to include a first grade. Pam Cumming taught the first Christian first grade in Lexington Park in the fall of 1978.
Desiring the new school to serve the entire Christian community of St. Mary's County, the church established Lexington Park Christian School as an independent, non-denominational, board-governed school. Sarah Patterson became its first administrator. The school opened its doors to 68 students in grades one through five in the fall of 1979.
Continued school growth, and the need to expand the opportunity for Christian education to a growing Southern Maryland student population base resulted in the plan to build a new campus on a 193 acre property, purchased in 1999, in Callaway, MD, just a few short miles from the current location. In 2002, in keeping with the vision to serve all the Christian community of southern Maryland, LPCS changed its name to The King's Christian Christian Academy (KCA).
In August of 2004, the doors to the new campus at Callaway, MD opened for the first time. The vision that the founders had for an independent Christian elementary school and high school to serve the needs of Southern Maryland, now and in the future, had been realized. KCA continues to grow each year along with the vision to make Christian education available to more students.
