PSAT

The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test™. It also gives you a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

  • critical reading skills
  • math problem-solving skills
  • writing skills

Place:  The King's Christian Academy Multi-Purpose Room

Who is to take the test:  10th and 11th graders (Homeschoolers welcome, please call Guidance Counselor to register by October 1, 2008)

Fee:  $15 (All students must pay this fee including KCA parents)

ACT

The ACT® test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.

  • The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science.
  • The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.

Both the ACT/SAT are equally accepted by all colleges and universities, so what I recommend is that you take BOTH tests the spring of your junior year. Once you get the scores back, then retake the exam that you feel is the "best fit" for you. You will have the best chance of raising your score if you are comfortable with the test.

There are plenty of free resources for free practice tests and/or questions on the internet, so it is not necessary to pay for expensive classes. Just discipline yourself to study on a regular basis. The local library has free SATs on their computer system, so stop by on a Saturday and check it out!
