The Kings Christian Academy

Mrs. Spade's First Grade

Welcome to the King's Christian Academy's first grade class!

A NOTE FROM MRS. SPADE AND MRS. NEVALA

It is our privilege to be back again and working with your child this year.  First grade is both challenging and AMAZING!  Our school considers it our mandate to work alongside both you and your church in making this time both a spiritually and academically profitable one for your child.  We need to be in prayer for one another that the lives of these little ones grow as God desires.  Please feel free to share important insights you may have that will help us better minister to your first grader.

We have a really busy day in Grade 1.  It is a real challenge for children this age to LISTEN well for long periods.  To help keep distractions to a minimum we do have a NO TOY or GAME policy (includes balls as well).  We will appreciate in advance your oversight in this.  There will be an opportunity for the kids to share some of these things when we begin a SHOW-and-TELL TIME later in the year.

Look forward to an extraordinary year for you and your child as we work together and depend upon God to "teach us His ways."  Isaiah 2:3

AN UPDATE FROM MRS. SPADE

QUARTER #3!

As we enter quater three, I want to say a word of encouragement to you who work so faithfully on homework and the "extras" with your child--it helps so much!  One word of caution:  third quarter seems to be an easy time for the children to hit a SLUMP!  Blame it on winter, low light, the barometer, few  breaks, whatever it is they really need those additional words of praise and the notice of their efforts.  They work hard and you can be proud of them.  Please keep abreast of the quality of the work coming home.

Also watch for the following 'notching up' requirements in grading:

No name - 2 pts.

Backwards numbers and letters - 1 pt

(on tests and Language sentences - limit 5)

No coloring (when assigned) - 2 pts.

No spacing (Language sentences) - 1 pt.

Capitals (where none should be) - 1 pt.

   (tests/language sentences - limit 5)

It does my heart good to hear your child reading -- all of them are.  We will be especially working on reading with more speed and smoothness.  Also, as the students progress to the more advanced readers we will continue to work on their comprehension and expression as well.

We will increase the accountability of being a good listener.  I will be helping them by zeroing in on reading directions for themselves on some areas of their work.  Also, checking themselves to see if they have completed ALL of their work.  I will not return incomplete papers anymore because they "forgot" a section.

Thanks again for all you do there at home---I cannot express just how valuable your reinforcement is in this particular foundational year...we really are a TEAM!

SNACK TIME:  Each morning we will have a snack time.  You will want to include a NUTRITIOUS type snack for this time.  Fruit or cheese crackers, veggies/dip, and yogurt are all good choices.  We love celebrating birthdays with a special treet so feel free to send in such on or near your child's birthday.  Please be aware that we do have a student with a peanut allergy, so please no goodies with peanuts or made with peanut oils.

TEACHERS:  Mrs. Spade is the first grade teacher but will not be here on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday afternoon in order to better attend to family needs.  This year Mrs. Carol Nevala will continue the teaching on those afternoons.  Since she is already known by many of our first graders, this should be a smooth transition for them.

FIRST GRADE ROOM MOM:  If you have any questions about first grade activities, please feel free to call our first grade room mom -
